Probably I'm a weirdo, but when I see the word "remarkable" it reminds me of
"Rectum: unremarkable" from dictations of operative reports.

И вам banana спасибо. Я уже стал привыкать к комплиментам . Английский это настолько повседневная вещь для меня, что я давно не обращаю внимание на его качество. Насчёт времени в Канаде секрет. Хотя понимая, что вам это нужно для примерной самооценки скажу - по секрету конечно . Живу я в среде скажем так больше чем 14+ лет. С языком у всех по разному получается. Знаю людей которые намного дольше живут, а говорить толком не научились. Знаю и других (моя дочь например) которые говорят намного лучше меня. Хотя таких конечно ничтожно мало
PS. Раз уж я разошелся хвастаться поделюсь мыслью, которая может довольно странной показаться. Мой уровень понимания различных акцентов (индийский, китайский и ньюфи включительно) часто превосходит уровень найтив спикеров из глубинки. Всё просто на опыте общения в Торонто основано. А в глубинке все зачастую говорят очень одинаково и неподготовлены воспринимать вариации на тему родного языка.

I've got a good ear for american accent, but when I hear british accent I fall in panic, australian accent is very nice to listen.

Am I the only one who loves British accent? Posh British I'd say.
I'm trying to maintain my proper English, and it IS quite hard to do, especially here, in Canada.

Posh British-music to my ears, American accents, there are so many of them, some sound ok, some are plain red-neck country bumpkin:) Indian accent or some sort of Hindish is the funniest one I've ever heard. Australian is way too harsh and peasant for my liking. However there are many funny English accents, for example people from Birmingham, with their "U" or "OO" instead on "O" or "A".

I must say that I do not particularly like or dislike any of English accents. I think as with all accents, some guys sound pleasing to the ear and others don’t.
Both posh “Hi Mate” and the more upper/middle class cultured tone “Hello Old Chap” sound a bit snooty to my ear, even though English people I know - aren't like that at all. I just think that people who learn English to live in Canada/States would be better off learning more appropriate local sound. That was the only reason I earlier recommended to stay away from British accent. Otherwise I couldn't care less.

sorry but posh is by no means "hi mate" kind of style and not what I was talking about its sort of snobbish proper English:) more of a BBC and higher society style(Gosh, I'm scared to be attacked by people here, in this thread now, as I mentioned higher society ) when I was quite bad at English, I understood American English much better, as my language skills improved, I became fond of British English, no idea why.

For conventional user, I guess it is better to catch up with the local accent. As for me, being a brat, I want to be different, just because it's such fun, and in this region of thousands of different accents I have an objective to maintain as British British accent as possible.

BTW same with French, Quebecois French is so different from French French:)

I'm definitely not an accent specialist or linguist by any extend and don't know the basic divisions of different British accents into posh or not. To me they're all just British accents, in fact I would probably have great difficulty distinguishing between the different accents let alone tell which ones are considered "posh" or not by British people. Had to take a glance at wiktionary (have mercy ):

Snobbish, materialistic, prejudiced, under the illusion that they are better than everyone else. usually offensive. (especially in Scotland and North England)
Quotation: We have a right posh fart moving in next door

So I guess I was wrong on “Hi Mate” example above. The reason I used that was colleague of mine Brit who lives in Canada for some-teen years. He uses “Hi Mate” all the time. Even his nickname is Mate and trust me on this - he is nowhere near high society .

I truly enjoy British accent, although it is only recently that I started to catch it. Hugh Laurie sounds classy in Jeeves & Wooster and it is sexy.

But to me deliberately speaking in a trained accent is like pointing your little finger when sipping tea - equally rediculous and inapropriate in most real life circumstances. Looks like too much effort to stand out, or some perverted way of saying look at me / I'm better than you / I'm different, which is always funny and not likable at all if it is for real.

But on the other hand I believe there's nothing that can help one understand accents more than trying to practically imitate them. So, I agree with arrow. Learning and knowing and having an ability to speak british english is a good thing and I wish I could do that.
It only sounds stupid when faked with straight face.

arrow, Oh, its just a British slang "Posh English", means, exactly the accent, the one the Queen speaks with.

For instance, our fave number 20, in proper (pro-pa ) English is twenTy(american tweny), Los Angeles ( in posh would be like - Los AngelEEs) verb to launch would be " LOnch", and in general they tend to pronounce words softly.
I'm mesmerized by this accent right now, I find it so incredibly beautiful. How I wish I had such a gorgeous accent

yeap, it is so funny how they use "Mate" a lot, and often they pronounce it as "M-ai-t" not "Meit" as we'd expect it to be. It is a topic of a whole conversation, all of these Mate, Bloke, Fellow, Lad, Dude, Bro, and so on.

murlokotam, have no idea why, but you seem to have something personal against me. I'd tell you what, if someone likes the accent and have capability in maintaining it, so let it be. For me it is far more stupid and childish to be as judgmental as you are right now. If it makes you think that someone is trying, by obtaining a different accent to be or rather seem to be "better than you" there is just something wrong with the whole picture and I feel sorry for you.

I have my opinions and I share them straight. It's up to you whether to take offence when my ideas contradict yours, and I'm actually surprised you do.

Yes, I love british accent (my respect to non native english speakers who can imitate it).
And yes, I do think that acting posh is a ridiculous way to stand out and I make fun of it. What's about you here? No idea.

as for me, I always admired English-speaking actors, as they have to work with so many different accents and able to mimic them when they work on a certain character. amazing!
right now, as its been such a long time since my immersion into the English-speaking world, I'm sort of accent-free, it used to be an American South Cali accent, where other students couldn't tell that I'm an international student after a year or so. I want to use this opportunity to try and obtain the Posh British accent I like so much. Mini challenge as I take it. If it works-fine, if not I will stick to my current unidentifiable accent Very few people were able to tell that I'm Russian, including my husband, he still thinks that my accent is more French, or may be he's just flattering me, who knows
